Darwin City Council - Smart Technology Project
Gerard Rosse, General Manager City Futures, Darwin City Council
Darwin has been awarded a $5 million Australian Government technology grant as part of a $10 million project to ‘switch on’ the city and implement an Australian first with its comprehensive smart cities project. Darwin’s smart city project was announced as one of 52 successful projects totalling $28.5 million under Round One of the Australian Government’s inaugural Smart Cities and Suburbs Program. Under the Program, funding is flowing to communities across Australia, with 40% of successful projects located in regional areas.
The City of Darwin will lead the project in partnership with the Commonwealth and the Northern Territory Government.  The project will trial innovative smart city technologies that enhance the CBD community, improve delivery of services and overall, deliver economic value. The project deliverables include smart public LED lighting, expanded and improved Wi-Fi, HD CCTV and video analytics, smart parking sensors, micro climate stations all utilising high, medium and low bandwidth communications networks integrated though an overarching smart city platform with a comprehensive open data portal.
